Barcelona Zoo
★★★★★
Barcelona's classic zoo, located inside Parc de la Ciutadella. It has a good variety of animals, picnic areas, and a mini train that kids absolutely love. It's not the most modern zoo in the world, but for young children it more than delivers, and the location is unbeatable.
💡 Best for: Kids in their animal-obsessed phase (1-4 years)
⚠️ Avoid if... It's over 35°C — the animals hide and the kids melt
💡 Parent tip: Enter through the Wellington gate — it's closer to the kids' area. Bring swimsuits in summer: there's a splash pad zone that kids go wild for.
Barcelona Zoo won’t win any awards for being Europe’s most spectacular, but for kids aged 0-5 it’s a brilliant day out. It’s perfectly located inside the Ciutadella park, so you can combine it with a stroll through the park afterwards. Little ones go wild for the penguins, the dolphins, and the petting farm where they can touch goats and rabbits.
The mini train that circles the zoo is an absolute hit — our kids ask to go again every single time. There’s also a decent picnic area where you can sit and eat your packed lunch without anyone giving you side-eye. The best time to go is on a weekday during low season: you’ll practically have the zoo to yourselves.
An honest heads-up: in summer it’s brutally hot and there’s not much shade in some areas. If you’re going in July or August, get there first thing and plan to leave before 1pm. And don’t feel guilty if you only see half the animals — with little ones, half the zoo is already a win.
