Fageda d'en Jorda

A magical beech forest growing on volcanic lava in the Garrotxa region. The main trail is flat and stroller-friendly, making it one of the best nature walks for families with babies and toddlers in Catalonia. In autumn, the forest transforms into an explosion of colour.

La Fageda d’en Jorda is one of those places that looks like it belongs in a fairy tale. A beech forest growing directly on a lava field, with twisted trunks and light filtering through the canopy creating a magical atmosphere. The best part for families: the main trail (itinerary 2) is completely flat and the surface is well-compacted, so you can easily take a stroller or pushchair through it.

Autumn is when the forest is at its best. The leaves turn from green to orange and red, and kids love crunching through the fallen leaves and collecting sticks. The full loop takes about 45 minutes at toddler pace, which means giving them time to stop and examine every bug and every stone. There’s a picnic area near the entrance where you can have a relaxed lunch.

If you feel like extending the day, Olot is a ten-minute drive away and has a pleasant old town for a stroll. The Fageda cooperative (yes, the yogurt brand) offers guided tours where kids can see cows up close. It’s a perfect combo: forest in the morning, town and cows in the afternoon. Bring layers because it gets cool inside the forest even on sunny days.
