Rupit i Pruit

A medieval stone village perched on a cliff edge, with a hanging bridge, cobbled streets, and a waterfall reachable on foot. A journey back in time that looks like a movie set and fascinates children who love to explore and climb.

💡 Parent tip: The hanging bridge is a hit with kids but can be slightly scary for some. The streets are cobbled and uneven: babywearing is better than a stroller. The trail to Sallent waterfall is easy but has some steps.

Rupit is one of those villages that seems frozen in the Middle Ages. Stone houses with wooden balconies, narrow cobbled streets, and a hanging bridge over a ravine that is the number one attraction for kids. Crossing the bridge is a small adventure: it sways a little, has wooden planks, and gives children aged 3-5 a mix of excitement and nerves that they talk about for weeks.

The walk to the Sallent waterfall is the perfect complement. It’s about 30 minutes along a forest trail, with some sections of steps but nothing too challenging for children who walk well on their own (hence the minimum age of 2). The waterfall, which drops about 100 metres, is spectacular especially in spring when the water flow is strongest. The return path is the same, so allow about an hour and a half for the round trip with stops for exploring.

An honest heads-up: Rupit is not a stroller-friendly destination. The village streets are rough stone and the trail to the waterfall has dirt sections with roots and steps. Use a baby carrier if you’re bringing an infant. The village has a couple of restaurants serving hearty mountain food (stews, potatoes, cured meats) at fair prices. Go in spring to catch the waterfall in full flow and the forest at its greenest. In summer it dries up considerably and loses its magic.
