💡 Parent tip: The Sant Joan funicular is stroller-friendly. Bring snacks because there's not much to buy at the top. Go early to avoid queues.

Montserrat is probably the first day trip every parent in Barcelona should do with their kids. The drive up is already an adventure in itself: the rock formations appear suddenly and the children can’t stop pointing out the window. Once at the top, the Sant Joan funicular is the highlight for little ones. Eight minutes riding upward between impossible rock spires that make them feel like real explorers.
The monastery deserves a quick visit, especially if you time it with the Escolania boys’ choir (usually at 1pm on weekdays). Don’t expect the kids to last long inside, but the exterior and the plaza are perfect for them to run around. There are public restrooms near the basilica and changing tables in the toilets next to the cafeteria.
If you’re going with a baby, babywearing is more practical than a stroller for the hiking areas, though the funicular does accept pushchairs. Bring plenty of water and snacks: the cafeteria at the top is expensive and has limited options. Pro tip: combine this day with Colonia Guell, which is on your way back to Barcelona. That way you make the most of the drive.
